They say that the Lord Mayor's show has been cancelled only once and that was for the funeral of the Duke of Wellington. It must have been a close run thing this year because the weather was particularly vile. I headed down to Fleet Street after 12pm to capture the arrival of the Lord Mayor's entourage at The Royal Courts of Justice then to Victoria Embankment near Temple station to get a good spot just in time for the second half to start after mingling with the parading ones as they sheltered shivering from the storm during their lunch break. Heavy rain driven by strong chill winds from the South East made umbrella carrying pretty much a non-starter. Amazingly the weather did not discourage thousands of folk and families lining the route to watch the hundred or more parade groups entertain them. There were lots of marching bands, floats, horses and soldiery to get the crowd clapping and flag waving. The magnificent Mayoral gilded state coach was the penultimate act and it did not disappoint if you like your pomp and circumstance. Forgive me for missing the fireworks at five, I had to head on over to the Royal Albert Hall for the Born Free gig (see that film on my channel).
As usual, please let me know of omissions, errors and comments. Thank you - E.
