Tower
Bridge
Tube
station: Tower Hill
(Tube
Map)
This incredible
monument to Victorian engineering was completed in 1864 and is now one
of the enduring symbols of London.
The twin towers and linking catwalk support a mechanism that raises the
road so that big ships can pass through on their passage along the Thames.
The bridge, which, in its heyday, opened up to five times a day, is 150ft
(40m) high when raised and 200ft (60m) wide. A steam engine used to do
all the donkey work, but electricity took over in the 1970s.
There are fine views from here to the Tower
of London and upstream towards HMS Belfast.
Canary Wharf is easily visible downstream.
